SON MACHHARIYA

This play tells the story of Tetri sailor Tetri. Tetri is very beautiful. She is married to a boatman named Bisesar. Both of them live a happy life. Suddenly, one day, Bisesar is jailed for a fight against the atrocities being committed against his community, killing a man belonging to the village landlord. Tetri moves back to her father. She is her father’s only child and his support. Because of her beauty, some antisocial elements in society cast evil eyes on her. When her husband, Bisesar, doesn’t return from prison for a long time, Tetri’s father, lured by money, arranges her second marriage to a rowdy, with whom she is unhappy, and later runs away to her father’s home. Meanwhile, Bisesar returns from prison. Bisesar comes to his in-laws’ house to take Tetri, but her father demands a large sum of money in exchange for Tetri, which Bisesar cannot afford. Director

Sanjay Choudhary, with over four decades of experience in the performing arts, especially Maithili and Bhojpuri theatre, is a well-known stage director, actor, and teacher. Born on April 15, 1971, he has been actively directing and acting in Maithili theatre in the Delhi-National Capital Region since 2003. He has a strong command of Maithili, Bhojpuri, Hindi, and English. An expert in regional language productions, he has worked extensively with the Maithili Bhojpuri Academy under the Delhi Government, directing such well-known plays as Nai Lagi Dujjan Hasa, Chhuttha Ghail, Son Machhariya, Tussa Aa Banjhi, and Kinkartavya Vimoodh. His other notable productions include Sama Chakeva, Naika Bhanijara, Ugna Halt, Rukmini Haran, and Dak Ghar. Besides stage performances, he has also worked in television as an assistant director for the Maithili serial ‘Aab Kahu Mon Kahan Karaiye’ and as an actor in ‘Pahun’ on Doordarshan Bihar. He received an international acting award for the Maithili play Eeth-Uth in Nepal. Having trained in advanced workshops with renowned National School of Drama directors like Bhanu Bharti, B. V. Karanth and Tapas Sen, he has also worked as a theatre director at DAV School, Dwarka, and regularly conducts workshops to promote Maithili cultural heritage.

Director’s Note

Female-centric play – The plight of women in the Mallah community, and a female boatman grappling with it… ‘Tetri’… which has been given a name by social vultures… ‘Son Machhariya’… This play, written by Vikas Kumar Jha, shook me and compelled me to stage it.
