Bharat Rang Mahotsav – 2024

It is a matter of immense pride and honour that in keeping with its unending commitment towards theatre, the National School of Drama is organising Bharat Rang Mahotsav – International Theatre Festival of India from 1st February 2024 to 21st February 2024. Adding prestige to the occasion is the fact that 2024 marks the 25th year since the inception of this festival, which premiered in 1999 under the proficient supervision of National School of Drama’s then Director, Sh. Ram Gopal Bajaj.

Bharat Rang Mahotsav is often shortened and referred to as ‘Bharangam’. This Rang Maha Kumbh, a confluence of dramatic arts has grown by great lengths, accumulating a rich artistic history and legacy, in which not only Indian but also global theatre cultures have been brought together on a single platform. Epitomising this practice are the words “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” meaning, “one earth, one family”, from which are derived this year’s leitmotiv: “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Vande Bharangam(One Earth, One Family, Hail Bharangam!).

In a novel and exciting initiative, Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2024 has nominated Sh.Pankaj Tripathy, critically-acclaimed actor, and alumnus of National School of Drama to be the ‘Rang Doot’ or Festival Ambassador. Sh. Swanand Kirkire, an award-winning lyricist, noted actor, and also an alumnus of National School of Drama has penned the lyrics of this year’s ‘Rang Gaan‘ or Festival Anthem, which can be heard resounding in the corridors of the various venues hosting Bharangam 2024. Patrons, connoisseurs, and audiences also get the opportunity to engage in dialogue with intercultural theatre discourse, in which along with the classicism of ancient drama, the most modern theatre movements, as well as a rich tapestry of diverse folk and traditional art are presented during this twenty-one-day fiesta.

As has been the tradition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav, this time also a great number of foreign theatre troupes, along with groups from various regions of India have been invited to partake in this event, which will stage around one hundred and fifty different performances, enthralling the spectators in a total of fifteen different cities across the country, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The festival, heralded as the largest International Theatre Festival in the world, is scheduled to be inaugurated on the 1st of February, 2024 in Mumbai, and conclude on 21st of February, 2024, in Delhi.

The festival shall have a variety of Stage Theatre Productions, Student Diploma Productions, along with Allied Events such as Master Classes, National and International Seminars, Meet the Director, Living Legends, and Ambience Performances in a plethora of folks and regional forms, a Rang Haat or Theatre Bazaar, which is a networking event, ADVITIYA ’24, the National School of Drama Students’ Union’s initiative involving Street Plays, Folk Bands, interactive talks, and more, among numerous other creative endeavours.

Pushing its limits further, the National School of Drama is adding yet another feather to the Bharat Rang Mahotsav’s symbolic cap: by attempting to set a new world record for the highest number of simultaneous performances around three common themes – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (one Earth, one family), Panch Pran (Five Oaths), and Vikasit Bharat (Developed India); On the 21st of February, 2024, at exactly 4 PM (Indian Standard Time), Two Thousand Performing Arts Groups from across the country will present a piece as part of NSD’s Jan Bharat Rang program, a never-before-seen initiative, where each performance will be streamed live on one among the following Social Media Platforms – YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram. Through Jan Bharat Rang, the National School of Drama seeks to immortalise Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2024 by raising the bar to epic proportions.
