Play
BADZAAT based on ‘The Brute’ a story written by Anton Chekhov and adapted by Mrs. Bilquis Zafirul Hassan. Badzaat brings to this ageless war a vivid battle between Mrs. Khan and Nadir Changezi. Mrs. Khan is determined to faithfully mourn her unfaithful husband while Mr. Changezi is an equally determined creditor bent on hounding the widow for the repayment of his loan. This war of words escalates, and soon in utter frustration, Changezi challenges the ‘grieving’ widow to a duel. When Mrs. Khan proudly accepts, sparks begin to fly, but not sparks of contempt. Changezi finds in her defiance an overwhelming attraction that he cannot fight. As the play ends, the proposal for a duel is rescinded and a proposal of marriage is issued instead.

Director’s Note
In directing Anton Chekhov’s Adapted play in urdu “Badzaat,” it’s essential to embrace the interplay between comedy and the underlying human complexities. The characters, Mrs. Khan and Nadir Changezi, offer a comedic yet profound exploration of love, pride, and the absurdity of human behavior. The directorial approach had highlight the passionate, almost farcical, interactions while delving into the characters’ vulnerability, showcasing the transformation and growth in their emotional journey. The tension between obstinacy and vulnerability within these characters were highlighted to emphasize the evolving nature of love and the human condition. As director of this play I can feel interpretation to celebrate the play’s humor while underscoring its deeper emotional resonance.
