KAMRUPA

The play is based on the life of Rani Sadhani, a princess in the history of Assam. The Chutia are the ancient Kingdom of Assam. Sadhni was the daughter of King Dharmadhajpal of this dynasty. The Chutia were devotees of the goddess Ma-Kechaikhaiti. Inspired by the strength of Kechaikhaiti, he has committed himself to protect his country and his nation. According to Sayambar custom, Sadhani married a young man named Nitai, a skilled hunter. Nita is the last Chutia Raja Nitipal. They are the achievers of speech. Nita doesn’t know about politics. After become in the king, Nitai made some friends ministers and they knew nothing about politics either. The Ahoms, another powerful Raj dynasty of Assam, took this opportunity to invade the Chutia kingdom. Sadhani fought against the Ahoms with Nitipal with her army of hundreds of women. Nitipal was killed in the battle at Chandangiri Hills. Therefore, it is important to understand the importance of these characteristics in the development of the Ahom kingdom. This is the story of the play.

Director

Well known actor and director, Krishna Bhuyan has been working in different fields of theatre in Assam. He has played major roles in famous play such as Andhayug, Kukurnesia Manuh, Tomak Valpaw, Janmantar etc., and in about thirty plays and TV serials in Assam. He has also directed Kangsha, Siyali Palegoi Ratanpur, Moi Tuniya Tun Tunalo, Lavita, Akashor Nodi etc. He directed Andharat Sihatar Mukhbur that participated in Jashne Bachpan 2012, Dhaniramar theatre that participated in 10th Purrvottar Natya Samaroh, 2018 and Panchawati in Pragjyotish festival,2020 organised by National School of Drama, New Delhi.

Director’s Note

KAMRUPA is a play based on Chutia history of Assam and myth. This is a  story of the sacrifice and Heroism of Queen Sati Sadhani which is directed against the backdrop of that time.
