RASHTRANAYAK

The play begins with Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s childhood. We see how his father, Ashutosh Mukherjee, instills patriotism in his children. As he grows up, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee becomes the Minister of Industry, representing the Congress Party. After India’s independence, political differences arise between him and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, forcing him to leave the Congress Party. He resigns as Industry Minister in the Congress Party government. Subsequently, he seeks advice from Shri Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar, also known as ‘Guruji,’ and, along with Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, establishes the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, a political party. Adhering to his ideology of ‘One Nation, One Constitution, and One Flag,’ he dedicates his life to this cause, ultimately sacrificing himself for the nation. Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee strongly opposed the ‘permit system’ implemented by Sheikh Abdullah in Jammu and Kashmir. At that time, Indian citizens could travel freely within the states, but a special permit was required to enter Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Mukherjee argued that ‘one country cannot have two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two flags.’ He also questioned Pandit Nehru as to why Jammu and Kashmir was not treated like any other state of India. As part of his protest, he entered Jammu and Kashmir without a permit. He was arrested and later died in custody under mysterious circumstances. For this reason, he is remembered as a great leader who sacrificed his life to ensure the full integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the Indian Constitution.
