SOMETHING LIKE TRUTH

Something Like Truth written by eminent writer Shanta Gokhale explores our relationship with truth, freedom, and justice. Through four powerful monologues, the play journeys from the 19th century France to India in 2000’s to Sri Lanka in 2010. Four women from different parts of the world share their stories, inviting audiences to reflect on their ideas and perspectives about truth in today’s times.

Writer

Shanta Gokhale is a renowned bilingual writer, translator, journalist, and theatre critic, celebrated for her versatility & social insight. Formerly the Arts Editor at The Times of India, she has also scripted films, including the national award-winning documentary on poet Narayan Surve. Her notable books include Tya Warshi, The Theatre of Veenapani Chawla, Satyadev Dubey: A Fifty-Year Journey Through Theatre, Crowfall, One Foot on the Ground, and Playwright at the Centre.

Director

Parna Pethe is a celebrated artist with over a decade of experience in Marathi cinema and theatre. She has been a prominent voice in experimental theatre, with acclaimed performances in Bed Ke Neeche Rehnewali, A Friend’s Story, and Satyashodhak, where her portrayal of Savitribai Phule received wide acclaim. Her role in Charchaughi has crossed 300 shows. She won the Zee Gaurav Award (2023) for Adlay Ka. She also earned praise for Love You and is currently performing the children’s play Tottochan. A Vinod Doshi Fellow and Nargis Dutt Awardee, Parna has worked in Marathi cinema with films like Rama Madhav (Filmfare Award), YZ, Photocopy, Faster Fene, and Medium Spicy.

Director’s Note

Delving into the meaning of truth and untruth in today’s world has been a deeply enriching experience. As a director, the challenge and joy lay in weaving individual monologues into a unified theatrical journey. Something Like Truth is a collective reflection on what justice, freedom, and truth signify in contemporary times

Group

Social Manch is a creative platform dedicated to producing impactful theatre plays. The group’s current productions include Tujhi Aukat Kaye, Something Like Truth, Goat, and Backstage Wala. Peace Projects is an interdisciplinary collective founded in 2025 by Parna Pethe, Aabha Soumitra, and Maitreyee Joshi. It brings together theatre, music and movement to create deeply interwoven, collaborative performances.
